A State-of-the-Art Building and Grounds:
W.H. McGuffey Elementary School opened in Fall, 2005, as "West Elementary".  The new building on South Schenley was a collaboration between Architectural Vision Group and Ralph Tyler Companies.  Co-funded by the Ohio School Facilities Commission, the new building is a two story facility with a total area of 97,009 sq. ft. The project was featured in the "American School & University" Publication in 2007 for Educational Design Excellence.

Some features of the building include:
  • Modern security features
  • An airy, glass-enclosed two-story lobby, both for visibility into the building and to welcome the community.
  • A 21st century media center that includes a vaulted-ceiling library, technology control center, large computer lab and a conference room.
  • A central courtyard garden that allows sunlight and fresh air into every classroom.
  • A glass wall along the second floor hallway that looks down into the library and cafetorium.
  • A cafetorium dual-use space suitable for dining as well as for assemblies and performances.
  • A large gymnasium with a curtain that can divide the space to accommodate two separate activities simultaneously.
  • Two separate play areas with playground equipment, and large fields for games and outdoor exploration.
  • Air conditioning and efficient heat mean that learning never suffers whether the day
is steaming hot or freezing cold.  Double paned tinted windows let light in, not heat.
